Chapter 21. INTERFACE ISSUES

Rangi felt surprisingly rested after the interface session. As far as he could determine, aside from being hungry he felt terrific. While he consumed a small plate of biscuits in Diana’s workroom, he, Diana and Rachel discussed the next steps they should take. Rangi would need to visit with members of the community who were aware he had been linked with the interface for the last few hours and let them know he was okay. It was agreed that Rachel would interface later that afternoon once Diana had made a few adjustments and that the three would begin working through all the introductory files that night under Diana’s tutelage.

Rangi had wanted to watch Diana link Rachel to the interface, but he knew he had responsibilities and he had to let people know he was okay. There were several important community tasks he had missed working on while he had been interfaced. The trio had agreed that Rachel was unlikely to repeat his mistake of looking at the green files. For now, Rangi needed to keep working through the responsibilities of his role as Acting Mayor while Graham Hing was still recovering.

It was with some reluctance that Rangi left the two women and sought out Campbell and his sister Claire. Claire was hard at work in one of the garages collating the distribution of food and goods for the coming week.

As he approached, she looked up and waived. “You’re awake! Thank God! Rachel told us you were linked up with the cloud and unconscious. Alex and I looked in on you last night but Campbell’s been keeping people away. In case…well, we weren’t sure you were ever coming out. That would have been all the people needed, the mayor and his deputy out of commission. So, what happened?”

Alex’s head popped out of one of the other garage units. “Rangi! I was just giving Claire a hand with the distribution. Are you okay now? I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rachel this concerned.”

Two ladies walking past noticed Alex and Claire talking to Rangi and they drew close to express their concern over his welfare. Soon a small crowd of well-wishers had gathered on the street. The concerns expressed by the gathering felt strange to Rangi. It was as if he’d just had the longest sleep-in ever. He felt well rested, he felt fine. Only now, there was a barrage of people who wanted to know he was okay.

Rangi raised a hand to quiet the group and explained that he was fine. “The interface works but we are not sure yet whether we can make the cloud leave permanently or even communicate new instructions to it. I made a mistake while I was trying to understand how to connect with it, but we think we have sorted that problem. Rachel was going to interface with cloud about now and…”

Alex interrupted. “You let my daughter use that interface when you’ve just been unconscious? That is completely irresponsible!” He ran off in the direction of Diana’s house.
